The course will introduce the Climate Change basics, especially the physical basis, major impacts, related vulnerability, adaptation and mitigation measures. The concept and a definition of “Nature-based Solution” (NbS) is given. Students will understand the criteria to qualify a solution as NbS, its indicators for assessment and evaluation. They will be sensitized to stakeholder engagement in the Science-Policy-Practice Interface (SPPI) and its methods and approaches.
The course is all along illustrated by African and European examples and study cases.

The course will introduce the definitions and main concepts of “Climate Change Adaptation Pathways”. Students will measure the benefits of the approach for the decision-makers. Under strong uncertainties, they face indeed difficult contexts and need some methodology for adaptation based on intended outcomes.
The course proposes a participatory scenario of planning and modelling and is illustrated by African and European example and study cases.
Theme 2025: COP30 in Belem (Brazil)
Team work and committee work – 16hours in groups of 3 people
Teams are delegates of one country and shall define their positions on the main topics of the COP30:
– Energy transition
– Forest protection
– Indigeneous community inclusion
– Climate finance
– Mechanism between developed and less developed countries
3 technical committees with representation of all countries discuss and propose draft deliverables
A final summit negociates and adopts the final deliverables using the UN model
Represented Countries are: Kenya, Uganda, South Africa, The Netherlands, Portugal, Brazil, China, Japan, USA
The approach is Problem Based Learning where the groups have to understand the context and the problem, to interact regularly with the stakeholders, to look for complementary knowledge/information/data, and to propose inputs.
Specific activities will raise the competence and skill awareness such as teamwork, project management, and communication.
